Title
[edit]The title of this article should not have been changed without prior discussion. Badagnani (talk) 04:15, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- It seems as of 2010, he's generally credited as "Hannibal Lokumbe" (e.g. [1]). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:48, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
- This man is a fake. 98.96.33.133 (talk) 02:35, 11 September 2023 (UTC)

The result of the proposal was moved. There's certainly consensus against the Marvin Peterson name. With mixed usage between Hannibal and Hannibal Lokumbe, it makes sense to side with WP:NATURAL and the (admittedly very small) majority of editors in the discussion. --BDD (talk) 17:10, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
Marvin Peterson → Hannibal Lokumbe – Artist self-identifies as Hannibal Lokumbe and this is the name used to refer to him in the press.. Relisted. BDD (talk) 17:28, 11 June 2013 (UTC) groupuscule (talk) 21:32, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oppose the proposed move per WP:UCN as that name is not supported by the sources or external links for the article. The article User:Gyrofrog cites above uses "Hannibal", not "Hannibal Lokumbe". Support a return to the article's previous title of Hannibal (musician) where it lay before an undiscussed move. — AjaxSmack 02:16, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- IMO, "Hannibal (musician)" is fine but "Hannibal Lokumbe" is a little better.
- Gyofrog's article uses "Hannibal Lokumbe" first, then "Hannibal".
- "The artist formerly known as Marvin Peterson and, later, Hannibal Marvin Peterson was talking about his name, which is now Hannibal Lokumbe, or just Hannibal." (Philly Inquirer)
- Using a full name seems better than using a counter-intuitive parenthetical tag.
- "Hannibal Lokumbe" is easier to search for.
- It matters to him! From same article, above:
The name Lokumbe came from another part of his heritage. ``Lokumbe is the spirit that lives in the wind, he said. "It came to me in a dream after I performed a [Cherokee] ceremony that my great-grandmother, in a dream, told me to perform.
- "My great-grandmother was a Cherokee shaman. She helps me maneuver through this beautiful maze we call life. After this ceremony, the ceremony of clay and ash, during which I prayed and fasted for four days, I was allowed to use the name in public.
- I think we can&should respect that. groupuscule (talk) 08:13, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- Support move (and redirect) to "Hannibal Lokumbe" as per the JazzTimes article I cited above in 2010 (which does first mention him as "Hannibal Lokumbe", see 2nd paragraph). Furthermore his own website is called hanniballokumbe.com. Clearly he presents himself to the public as "Hannibal Lokumbe" – much like Paul Hewson presents himself as Bono, Allan Konigsberg as Woody Allen, Edison Arantes do Nascimento as Pelé etc. and, accordingly, that's how we've named Wikipedia articles about those individuals. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:17, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
- Well, not exactly. We call those people by those names because they are their common names, not because they self-identify as such. Cf. Cat Stevens, not Yusuf Islam; Snoop Dogg, not Snoop Lion; Mos Def, not Yasiin Bey. — AjaxSmack 01:18, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- Well, what is his common name, then? Allmusic variously lists him as Marvin "Hannibal" Peterson, Hannibal, Hannibal Lokumbe, and Marvin "Hannibal" Petersen [sic]. He does release CDs as Hannibal Lokumbe, though (example). I think, though, at minimum we ought to move this back to Hannibal (musician). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 18:11, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
- The current title and "Hannibal Lokumbe" are the least common. I prefer "Hannibal (musician)" since it reflects most of his creative output. Redirects will guide other searches there. — AjaxSmack 03:59, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
